What happens to our recycling?

Glass, aluminium, and steel will all be recycled onshore.

Paper and cardboard will be a mixture of onshore and offshore processing.

The food scraps collection will be taken to a composting facility in Hampton Downs, enabling waste to be turned into useful compost.

Plastics 1-7 will be collected as part of the new service but international restrictions on importing and exporting recyclables are currently affecting nationwide council recycling services.

Plastic types 1, 2 and 5 will be recycled but we will still need to send plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7 to landfill until another solution is found or the international restrictions change.

This does not include plastic bags or other soft plastics. The Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme continues to collect soft plastics from nine selected Countdown and The Warehouse stores in Hamilton. This is a scheme Hamilton City Council is making a funding contribution towards.
